COBBLESTONE FARMERS MARKET NEWSLETTER
October 13, 2018
Shopping at the Cobblestone Farmers Market twelve months of the year is the best way to enjoy seasonal bounty,
from blueberries to delicious greens. Each of these seasons offers their own gifts to nature — variety of squash, root vegetables, fruits, teas, soaps, flowers, baked goods, and more. It’s well known that shopping locally helps small farm owners and food artisans compete with larger producers who dominate the food industry. However, because farmers are often growing and maintaining crops twelve months out of the year, continued support from market shoppers is essential to building and maintaining our local food economy. While markets are becoming more popular year round, they are still significantly less hectic in the fall and winter months.
Take advantage at the Market by building a relationship with your local farmers and vendors. Ask about their farm or craft, and don’t be afraid to ask for recipes or preparation tips. They’re the experts after all!
Check out all the beautiful new products coming in each week at the Farmers Market!
Have you seen Persimmons popping up around market?
A persimmon is actually a soft berry like fruit that can be eaten fresh, cooked, or dried.
Persimmons make delicious jams, pies, steamed puddings, bread and muffins, stuffing, curry, cookies, AND smoothies.
Be sure to check out ALL corners of the market to find frozen berries, apples, fresh ginger, greens, persimmons, fresh turmeric, and more local smoothie editions.
Not only do you get to support your local food economy by getting the best local product – you also receive more nutrient dense food by sourcing locally.
More bang for your buck!!
You may see these beautiful, but strange looking ‘new’ squash at market.
North Georgia Candy Roaster is a RARE heirloom variety.
Originally cultivated by the Cherokee Indians in the Appalachian Mountains.Smooth and sweet. Becomes sweeter with time.
You can substitute in recipes that use winter squash or sweet potato. This squash can be fried, baked, or roasted. Make into a purée and use like you would puréed pumpkin in breads, pies, or pasta dishes. Just throw it in the oven with the skin on for baking if the sight of cutting it looks too daunting
– you will not want to miss this sweet treat!
Do not forget to grab your decorative pumpkins to warm up your home with beautiful local product. Squash comes in all shapes and sizes this time of year and we just can not get enough of them – ask your farmer about their favorite recipes and get to cooking with the seasons!
When the weather turns cold, there’s nothing more comforting than a slow-simmered stew of carrots, turnips, parsnips, sweet potatoes, and more. The farmers’ market is just brimming with these gorgeous tubers and taproots.
